Terragen is a great freeware terrain rendering program, though it can be frustrating to learn. But well worth the effort once you succeed. You can find it here and a couple great tutorials on how to use it here and here. Click on the thumnails to see larger pictures. I'm still a novice Terragen user so please excuse it if some aren't so good!
