Materials Needed - PSP 8 - Get it here. (Could be done in ver. 7x with modification)
Note: whenever I say to add a layer, add a raster layer, unless otherwise specified.
1. Open a new image, 400 x 400 and flood fill with a colour if desired.
2. Add a new layer and name it "head". Take your preset shapes tool, antialias checked, create as vector UNchecked, retain style UNchecked, foreground null and background a colour of your choice, I used #F8857A, draw a roundish ellipse as shown:
3. Add a new layer and name it "outer eye". Change your background colour to white and the foreground to black. Have your line width set to 2. Draw an ellipse for the left eye and then take your selection tool and select the bottom part, as shown:
Hit your delete key.
4. Take your pen tool, width 2 and set to draw mode, line segments, foreground
black, background null and draw a line across the bottom. Zoom in if you need
to to do this. The following image is shown zoomed in twice:
5. Add a new layer and name it "middle eye" Make your foreground null and your background a colour of your choice, I used #4169CD. Draw a smaller ellipse inside the eye and once again, delete the bottom part. Line it up with the bottom with your mover tool.
6. Add a new layer and name it "inner eye". Change your background to black. Draw a third elipse, this time make it more round and have it cover up the bottom portion of the blue. Cut off the very bottom with your selection tool. Effects--->3D Effects--->Inner Bevel. Use the Round Preset but change the Shininess to 45.
7. Add a new layer. Take your pen tool and set the width to 2, Create as Vector and Contiguous UNchecked, Mode: Draw and Segment Type: Freehand. Foreground black and background null. Draw a few lines for eyelashes. If you don't get it right the first time, use the Undo (Ctrl+z), it took me a LOT of tries to get it the way I wanted it!
8. Turn off your background layer, your head layer and the inner eye layer. Merge visible the rest. Rename the merged layer "left eye" and turn the other layers back on. On the left eye layer, Layers--->Duplicate. Image--->Mirror. Rename the duplicate layer "right eye" and make sure both eyes are where you want them. Go to your inner eye layer and duplicate. With your mover tool, move it over to the right eye. The reason we don't merge this with the other layers and duplicate and mirror is we want the highlight in the same direction for both eyes. Now, if you like you can merge each inner eye layer with the corresponding eye layer.
9. Add a new VECTOR layer. Take your pen tool, and change the line width to 4 and the segment type to Line Segments. Check create as vector. Keep your foreground black and background null. Draw a line across the middle of the head below the eyes where you want the nose to be. Hold down your Ctrl key and add a node in the middle when you see the word "ADD" as you move your cursor over the line.
Right click on the node and choose Node Type--->Symmetric. Pull the node up a bit and pull out on the arrow to make it rounder. When you are happy with it, Layers--->Convert to raster layer. Rename the layer "nose" and if you need to, place it where you want it with the mover tool.
Tip: Mine was wider than I wanted so I just used the deform tool to bring the sides in and make it narrower.
10. Add a new layer. Now we will do the mouth. Take your pen tool and change the width to 5. Keep the foreground black and background null. Using the same technique, draw a line vertically for the left edge of the mouth. Add a node in the middle and change to symmetric, then pull to the right and pull out on the arrow to round it. Convert to raster layer. Duplicate the layer and mirror.
11. Add a new VECTOR layer. Take the preset shapes tool and set it to rectangle and check Create as vector. Make your foreground null and your background black. Draw a rectangle from the left to right side of the mouth.
Add a node at the bottom centre and the top centre.
Make each node symmetric and pull down and then out with the arrow to round it.
12. Turn off all layers except the three mouth layers and merge visible. Rename the merged layer "mouth". Turn the other layers back on.
13. Add a new layer and name it "tongue". Have your foreground black and background red (I used #FF0000). Set your pen tool to freehand and line width 2. Draw a long oval for the tongue. You only need to draw down and up and around, not across at the back. Draw a black line down the middle of the tongue and move it to where you want it. I used the soften brush on the back of the tongue to make it less harsh.
14. Turn off all layers except the background layer. Merge visible and rename the merged layer "head". Turn your background layer back on. On the head layer, apply an inner bevel, round preset but change the Width to 1, the Shininess to 100 and the Depth to 2
15. Add a new layer and name it "hair". Use your rope tube that came with PSP to draw hair. I changed the colour with Colorize (Adjust--->Hue and Saturation--->colorize), and used 23 for the Hue and 109 for the Saturation
16. Turn off your background layer and merge visible the others. You now
have your cartoon face! Enjoy!
