Witch's Cauldron Page 2

8. If you like you can give it an inner bevel. (Effects--->3D Effects--->Inner Bevel. I found the Round preset with the intensity changed to 40 works well.

9. Take your preset shapes tool and draw a black elipse on top of the cauldron for the opening with your preset shapes tool. Because you are using vectors, it will draw on a new layer. Use your nodes to fit it better, then convert the layer to raster. If it's still not quite right, you can use your deform tool to adjust it. Rename the layer "top".

8. Selections--->Select All. If you are using the bevel, apply now. (I used the Round preset with no changes) Selections--->Contract by 5 pixels. Add a new layer and name it "brew". Flood fill with a green, I used #00FF00.

9. Effects--->Artistic Effects--->Balls and Bubbles. Use the Green Bubbles preset and play around with the settings to get something you like. Here are the changes I made:

On the Shape screen, I changed the coverage to 92, the average size to 46 and the Size variation to 49. I used Overlapping type and seed of 11510.

On the Surface screen, I changed the material colour to #388E38 and the opacity to 41.

I left the other two screens as is.

10. Add a new layer and name it "steam 1". Use the smoke tube to add wisps of steam. I used mine at 50% and let it go over the bottom edge and then used the eraser tool to erase the overage. Don't make it too thick as we will add another layer of stem later. I used Colorize (Adjust--->Hue and Saturation--->Colorize) to give the steam a greenish tinge.

11. Now we will do the legs. Take your pen tool and use the following settings:

On the bottom of the cauldron draw a rectangle as shown (because we are drawing it as vector, it will draw on a new layer automatically). Add a node at about the halfway point

Pull down on the node a bit to make the leg bend:

12. Layers--->Duplicate. Image--->Mirror. With your mover tool, place the legs where you want them. Drag the leg layers down to below the cauldron layer.

13. To make the ladle handle, go up to your top steam layer and change the line width on your pen tool to 10 and draw a line out from the pot at an angle, then add a node a little bit in from the outer end as shown:

14. Right click on the node and choose Node Type ---> Symmetric. Pull up on the node to make the handle. If you like, you can use the arrow to make it more round, but I didn't.

15. Layers--->Convert to Raster Layer. Apply the Inner Bevel, round preset but change the Intensity to 35. With your mover tool, place the handle down a bit if you want. Use your selection tool to select and cut off the bottom end.

16. Now, we want to make it look a bit more realistic, like it is disappearing into the brew. Turn off your steam layer if you like. Duplicate the brew layer (Layers--->Duplicate) and move this duplicate layer up to above the ladle layer (Layers--->Arrange--->Bring to Top). Turn the opacity of this layer down enough to see the lower part of the ladle handle, and zoom in and erase over that part of the handle, but leave the very lower part. Make sure you are on the duplicate layer of the brew as you are erasing the brew over the handle, not the handle itself. You are erasing the part encircled in red in the image below:

17. Turn on your steam layer back on. Go up to the duplicate brew layer and add a new layer. Name it "steam 2". This is how your layers should look:

Add more steam with the steam tube like you did in step #10.

You are now done your cauldron. Turn off the background layer and merge visible the rest to use in your Halloween images! Enjoy!
