Waffle Bar

In this tutorial, you will make the waffle bar that goes with the Waffle Bar Burner

Materials Needed:

PSP 7.x - get it here (would also work in 6.x and 8)

Fonts of your choice - I am using Adine Kirnberg available here,

and Annifont - available here

and Balmoral - available here

A tile image of your choice - I got mine here

Note: whenever I say to add a layer, add a raster layer.

1. Open a new image 450 x 250. Flood fill with a colour if desired.

2. Add a new layer. With your selection tool, anialias checked, feather 0, draw a square from 10, 10 to 110, 110. Flood fill with a colour of your choice. I am using #FEDAEC. Effects--->3D Effects---Inner Bevel. Use these settings:

Deselect.

3. Add a new layer. Lay down the letter "A" in your font of choice (I used Adine Kirnberg at size 48), same colour as you're using for the wafflebar, putting the letter in the middle of the square. Apply the Soft Edge Inner Bevel preset, but change the depth to 1, the smoothness to 27 and the Elevation to 45. Effects--->3D Effects--->Drop Shadow. Use the following settings:

Deselect.
Note: On a real waffle bar, the letter would be the exact same colour as the bar, only raised, but that affect is difficult to get in PSP and still be able to see it.

Turn off your background layer, and merge visible the square and letter layers. Turn your background layer back on. Rename the merged layer "wafflebar squares". Selections--->Select All. Selections--->Float. Selections--->Save to Alpha channel.

4. Edit--->Copy. Edit--->Paste--->Paste as new selection and line up beside the first square.

5. Edit--->Paste--->Paste as new selection and line up beside this square. Repeat once more so you have four squares across. Deselect.

6. Edit--->Copy. Edit--->Paste--->Paste as new selection and line up under the top layer of four squares. Deselect.

At this point, you can either proceed and make a label or stop and use the image with the wafflebar burner. If you wanted, you could make fewer than 8 squares, indicating that some in the package have been used.

7. Add a new layer and name it "label". With your selection tool, same settings, draw a rectangle in the middle of the wafflebar. Flood fill with an image of your choice. I am using a rose tile as I am making my favourite waffle bar, Rosebuds.

8. Add a new layer and draw a rectangle on the upper part of the label. Flood fill it with black. Add your text in font and colour of your choice, I used Courier New that is installed with windows and used the Adine Kirnberg font for the "A" of "Art". I am using some of the real text on the waffle bars, click on the image below for a full size view. I used a new layer for each line of text.

9. Add a new layer and name it "lower label". Draw a thinner rectangle across the bottom of the label. Put down the phrase "time & again" down in font(s) and colour of your choice. I used Annifont for the words and Balmoral font for the "&" and used 3 layers to do it (I like using lots of layers, because you can always move things around easier than trying to lay the text down in the exact spot you want it).

10. Turn off the background and wafflebar layers and merge visible the rest. On the label layer, apply the same drop shadow as in step #3, but change the blur to 16.

12. Selections--->Load from Alpha Channel and load the selection you saved in step #3. Selections--->Invert. Hit your Delete key to get rid of the shadow at the top and bottom of the label. Deselect.

13. Delete your background layer and merge the rest. You now have your waffle bar to go with the burner tutorial.

Enjoy!
