Waffle Bar Burner

I got one of these for Christmas last year (2002) and I just love it! I'm having a ball trying all the different scents of waffle bars you can get. For those who have never seen these, you can see more info here and here is a page with some of the different kinds of waffle bars. (I am not associated with these sites, nor with any business that manufactures or sells these products, I am merely providing the links for informational purposes)

To make the Waffle Bars that go with the burner, click here

Materials Needed:

PSP 7.x - Get it here

Eye Candy 4000 - Get it here - download my preset here

Alternatively, you can use Eye Candy 3000 - instructions given in tutorial - you can download a free copy of EC 3 here

Jasc's fire tube - came with PSP

Note: Whenever I say to add a layer, add a raster layer

This is my very first vectors tutorial. I hope I have explained the steps adequately - please do not hesitate to email me if I haven't; email link is at the bottom of this page.

1. Open a new image 400 x 400 and flood fill with a colour if desired. With your preset shapes tool, antialias checked, create as vector checked, retain style unchecked, and using the colour of your choice, draw an ellipse at the bottom centre of the canvas.

2. Click on your object selector and then click on "node edit" on your tool options palette. Hold down the shift key and move the cursor over the line until you see "add" as shown in image below:

Left click to add a node. Place 4 nodes on the image as shown (to keep the image small, only the top part of the ellipse is shown):

3. Now, take each of the two top nodes you made and pull up and out a bit to make the top of the burner. Use the handles on the nodes to even the top out, but don't worry about getting the line across the top exactly even as we will be hiding it anyway. When you have it the way you want it, right click anywhere on your canvas, and choose "quit node editing". On your layer, right click and choose "convert to raster layer". Name this layer "burner back" if you like.

Tip: If you have trouble getting both sides exactly the same, select the side you don't like, delete it and copy, mirror and paste the good side where the deleted side was (do this after converting to raster layer) Thanks to Carla of the Prestigious Dames for this tip.

4. With your selection tool, feather 0, antialias checked, draw a rectangle at the bottom over the part you want to delete to make it straight. Edit--->Clear or hit your delete key.

5. With your selection tool, same settings, draw an ellipse at the bottom of the burner and flood fill with your colour, where you deleted the bottom - what you are doing here is rounding out the bottom. (image 3)

6. Layers--->Duplicate. Rename the duplicate layer "burner front". Add a new layer, name it top, and with your selection tool, same settings, draw an ellipse at the top of the burner as shown:

7. Flood fill the selection with the colour you are using for your burner. Colours--->Adjust--->Brightness/Contrast - enter -15 for brightness, 0 for contrast. Deselect. You may have to use your mover tool to move this piece down to eliminate any space between the burner and top. Rename this layer "top". Rename the copied layer "burner front".

8. Add a new layer. With your selection tool, same settings, draw a smaller ellipse inside the top of the burner. Flood fill with whatever colour you want to use for the melted wafflebar.

9. On your "burner back" layer, Colors--->Adjust--->Brightness/Contrast. Enter -15 for brightness, 0 for contrast. Go to your "burner front" layer. With your selection tool, same settings, draw an ellipse for the opening for the candle, as shown:

Hit delete or Edit--->Clear. Selections--->Save to Alpha Channel. Deselect.

10. Still on the burner front layer, apply EC4 glass preset msr_waffleburner or if you are using EC 3, use the following settings (for some reason, I can't get the preset to save):

11. Go to your "burner back layer" and add a new layer, naming it "floor". With your selection tool, same settings, draw an ellipse on the bottom of the front opening. Flood fill with your colour and adjust the brightness by -20. With your deform tool, click on the centre top node and drag down as shown:

Click on apply and with the mover tool move the piece down.

12. Add a new layer and name it "candle bottom". With your selection tool, draw a rounded rectangle on top of the floor and flood fill with the metallic gradient, angle 90, repeats 0, invert selected. I adjusted brightness by -15. Deselect.

13. Add a new layer and name it "candle". With your selection tool, same settings, draw an ellipse on top of the metal band. Flood fill with white and deselect. Move this layer to below the "candle bottom" layer (Layers--->Arrange--->Move down or click on the layer and drag it to below the other one). If need be, adjust the placement with the mover tool.

14. Add a new layer and name it "wick". With your selection tool, same settings, draw a rectangle and flood fill with black.

15. Add a new layer and name it "flame". Use the fire tube that came with psp and put a flame on the wick. I used size 30.

16. Go to your "burner front" layer. Selections--->Load from alpha channel and load the selection you saved in step #9. Effects--->3D Effects--->Cutout. Use the following settings:

Now, you can delete your background layer and merge the rest and you have your burner.

Enjoy!
